CHAIRMAN

Lord Carter of Barnes CBE

Stephen A. Carter, Chair of the Board of Governors, is the Chief Marketing, Strategy and Communications Officer of Alcatel-Lucent, and is a member of the Executive Management Committee.

He has held a variety of Senior Executive roles in the Media and Telecommunications Industry including Managing Director of NTL UK & Ireland; Chief Executive of two marketing service businesses - J. Walter Thompson UK Limited and the Brunswick Group LLP; the founding Chief Executive of Ofcom (the UK Communications Regulator) and he was also Minister for Communications, Technology & Broadcasting.

 

He is a law graduate from Aberdeen University, and also completed the HBS AMP.

Stephen is a Non Executive Director of Informa plc, is a Trustee of The Royal Shakespeare Company, a Vice President of UNICEF UK , and is a Past Chairman of the Marketing Group of Great Britain.

Stephen was awarded a CBE for services to the Communications Industry  in 2006, and is a Life Peer.

Mr Paul Coen

Paul Coen

Appointed Governor in April 2011 and Vice Chairman in April 2012

Managing Director and Vice Chair of the UK Public Sector Group Citigroup.

Previously, Chief Executive of the Local Government Association and of Essex and Surrey County Councils. He is also a past member of Council at Surrey University and a non executive director of a number of companies.

Paul graduated from Manchester University in 1977 with a BA in Government and he is a Member of the Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply.

Professor Michael Clarke

Professor Michael Clarke CBE

Appointed Governor in July 2010.

Born in Yorkshire, he started his academic career at the University of Edinburgh as Director of Studies prior to joining Lothian Regional Council in 1975, later becoming Deputy Director, Policy Planning. Moving South in 1981, he headed the Local Government Management Board and advised a number of parliamentary Select Committees.

He has been a member of the Church of England General Synod since 1990 and chairs the Dioceses since Autumn 2008. Among a range of other interests, he chairs the Birmingham Royal Ballet.

Professor Dame Sally Davies

Appointed Governor in April 2006.

Chief Medical Officer and Chief Scientific Adviser for the Department of Health and NHS.

Dame Sally was appointed Chief Medical Officer in 2011 and she continues her Research leadership role. She set up and leads the National Institute for Health Research. Sally led the UK delegations to the WHO Ministerial Summit in November 2004 and November 2008, and is on the WHO Advisory Committee on Health Research, and chaired the external advisory group to the WHO on their Research Strategy Development.

In the 2009 New Year's Honours List, Sally was awarded a DBE for Services to Medicine.

Mrs Karen Jones CBE

Appointed Governor in July 2005.

Chairman, Food and Fuel Ltd; Non-executive Director, HBOS (Halifax Bank of Scotland) and Royal National Theatre Enterprises. Karen also chairs the Remuneration Committee of HBOS and the Rebuilding Childhoods Board of the NSPCC.

Previously: Chief Executive of Spirit Group Ltd, a 2000 strong pub and restaurant group. Karen is a very successful retailer with a strong track record of growing and managing businesses. She founded and developed both Café Rouge and the Pelican Group plc.

Previous Non-Executive Director roles include Gondola Holdings plc and Emap plc.

Julia Unwin

Ms Julia Unwin CBE

Appointed Governor in November 2011.

Chief Executive, Joseph Rowntree Foundation and Joseph Rowntree Housing Trust

Julia was a member of the Housing Corporation Board for 10 years and a Charity Commissioner from 1998-2003. Julia was also Deputy Chair of the Food Standards Agency and worked as an independent consultant operating within government and the voluntary and corporate sectors. In that role, she focused on the development of services and in particular the governance and funding of voluntary organisations. Julia has researched and written extensively on the role, governance and funding of the voluntary sector.

She has previoulsy held a position as chair of the Refugee Council from 1995 until 1998 and is a member of the University of York's Council.

Charles Pugh

Mr Charles Pugh

Appointed Governor in November 2012.

Curator and Consultancy Manager, National Trust.

Charles Pugh has over twenty years of experience working within the historic environment,. He is closely involved with a wide range of properties including the Ashridge Estate and Stowe House.

Charles graduated from King’s College, University of London with a BA in History. At the National Trust, he has worked as both an operational manager and as a curator in Wales and across the London & South East Region. More recently, he was seconded to help design and roll out the National Trust’s current internal consultancy model as part of its “Going Local” strategy.

Charles attended the University of East Anglia’s Museum Leaders Programme in 2011/12 and is a Trustee of the Booker Woods and Commons Protection Society, a community based local charity.

Professor Roland Kaye

Appointed Governor in April 2005.

Retired as Emeritus Professor from the University of East Anglia having previously been Dean of the Open University Business School. Roland was the Interim Dean at BPP University College Business School having previously served on their Academic Council.

Former President of Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA). Professor Kaye has also served on the executive of the Association of Business Schools and as adviser to the Chartered Management Institute.

Mr Graham Mackay

Appointed Governor in 2003.

Graham Mackay joined The South African Breweries Limited in 1978 and has held a number of senior positions in the group, including Executive Chairman of the beer business in South Africa.

He was appointed Group Managing Director in 1997 and Chief Executive of South African Breweries plc upon its listing on the London Stock Exchange in 1999. In 2012 he was appointed Executive Chairman, with the intention that he will continue in this role until the 2013 annual general meeting when he will become Non-Executive Chairman.

He is the Senior Independent Non-Executive Director of Reckitt Benckiser Group plc and a director of Philip Morris International Inc.

Sir Richard Mottram

Sir Richard Mottram

Appointed Governor in 1998.

Richard is currently chairman of Amey plc and of the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory, an agency of the Ministry of Defence (MOD). He is a member of the International Advisory Board of GardaWorld; vice-chairman of the Council of Management of the Ditchley Foundation; and a trustee of the Royal Anniversary Trust. He is a Visiting Professor in the Department of Government of the London School of Economics and Political Science.

He was formerly a civil servant. From 1992-2007 he held a number of top posts as Permanent Secretary of the Office of Public Service and Science (Cabinet Office), the MOD, the Department of the Environment, Transport and the Regions, and the Department for Work and Pensions, and, finally, with responsibility for security and intelligence in the Cabinet Office.

He is a past President of the Commonwealth Association for Public Administration and Management.

Chris Sullivan

Mr Chris Sullivan

Appointed Governor in July 2010.

Chief Executive, RBS Corporate Banking Division.

Chris Sullivan was appointed Chief Executive of the Corporate Banking Division in August 2009. The business holds market positions of 1st (in the UK) and 5th (globally). Previous roles include Chief Executive of both RBS Insurance and RBS Retail and Deputy Chief Executive of Retail Markets.

Chris is the Group sponsor for Gender Diversity and the Focused Women’s Network which has seen its membership grow from 500 to currently over 5,000 members.

He was appointed Head of Group Training and Development in 1991, reflecting his sustained interest in leadership and management development. In 1993, Chris became National Sales Director for Lombard Business Finance, moving on to become Chief Executive of Lombard Group, a business he joined from school in 1975.

Chris has a proven track record in growing businesses.

FCIBS - Chris Sullivan earned his Fellowship of Chartered Institute of Bankers Scotland for his services to Scottish Banking in various roles throughout his career.
